Temecula Wildlife Education: Will Temecula Animal Services Help Me With A Rodent Issue?

Your first instinct when you find a rodent on your property may be to call the city or county animal services, but doing so probably won’t get you very far. That is because in the vast majority of situations and areas across the country, the governmental animal services won’t actually help you with a rodent issue. They may be able to direct you to someone who can or give you limited advice, but that will be the extent of their help.



Why They Won’t Help
It seems odd to many homeowners that city and county animal services won’t help with a rodent issue, but most areas have held this policy for years. At some point in time, these services were probably offered for free in your area by the county or city. Most areas made the switch due to the simple matter of money. Helping residents with rodents, other wildlife, and domestic animals simply cost the area too much money. The majority of areas will still help with disturbances or issues caused by domestic animals like cats and dogs, but they won’t do anything about nuisance wildlife, whether they are rodents or another issue. For them, it is simply a matter of what services they can afford to offer.

Can You Do It Yourself?
Now that you know you shouldn’t expect assistance from your county’s animal services when dealing with rodents, you may be wondering what to do. The automatic reaction is to take care of the issue yourself and in some cases, this will be possible. If there is a single rodent, you may able to trap it and move it outside or use a snap trap to humanely kill it in the case of a rat or mouse. Be honest with yourself about your abilities, however. Who Will Help?

Therefore, you will have to find a wildlife professional with experience dealing with rodents. Many pest control companies that focus on insects claim to help with rodents as well, but they won’t typically do as effective as a job and are more likely to use inhumane control methods. Instead, be sure to choose a professional who focuses on wildlife and has experience using humane methods to control and remove rodents.
